Brewing beer apparently requires your FULL attention

So I started to make an extract kit Sunday afternoon and as I was starting to mash the specialty grains, I got it in my head that I was missing 3 pounds of DME. My panicked solution was to take a bag of 2-row malt and add it to the mash. I still added the full amount of DME to the boil and proceeded with the rest of the recipe per the instructions.

Once I had it cooled down and it was in the fermenter, I took a sample from the port and checked the OG – 1.067 – the kit’s expected OG range is 1.46-1.050. The ABV should be an interesting number to see at the end. I did pitch a second packet of yeast, just in case.

Bottom line, Sunday afternoon football and brewing do not mix well. Well, for me anyway. 🙂
